Gem Trails of Texas
Published in Paperback by Gem Guides Book Co (December, 1987)

An inacurate waste of timeThe first thing you need to notice about this book is the publishing date. While fifteen years is a blink in geological time, it does predate the GPS unit whose use would help this book a lot since many of the sites are only vaguely described. The scale on most of the map must be B-flat or something, because they are in no way proportional to the actual distances on the real roads. The book is also full of highly inaccurate or out right wrong numbers. Of the 46 sites in the book (back cover says 56), I have collected (visited) 27 of them. At many of the sites I found so little material, that I considered the whole thing to be a waste of time. At one site (Lake Possum Kingdom) if you follow the directions, you will need a boat for the last mile and a half of the trip. I often was able to apply a little reasoning about geology and find other sites that were far superior to the ones in the book. Some of the sites cover geographical areas that are larger than some states (Toyah Agate, Cleburne fossils.) Many of the sites are pay to hunt sites. Texas has enough roadside geology exposed in road cuts that I have never found it necessary to pay to hunt rocks. Further more I often knew of free sites that were far superior to the pay site listed. An example would be wood and jasper in the Trinity-Crocket area. I spent all day looking for anything and at the end of the day I had maybe a pound of low-grade stuff. The next weekend I went to Madison county 35 miles away and found about a hundred pounds in three hours. All in all, this book is a big disappointment.
This was/is a very helpful book for Texas rockhoundsThis helpful book has assisted in finding very interesting samples and formations...Unfortunately, it seems the most recent addition was published in 1987...An update would be wonderful...

Austin (Austin, 1999)
Published in Paperback by Gulf Publishing (July, 1999)
Average review score:

Only sporadically usefulThere are much better books on Austin, and much more complete. This seems more like a school paper on the city, as it glances over the wonders and possibilities of the city. Add the thin material to the poor layout and you, too, will be disappointed if you're hoping for a guide to this amazing city.
Even though it's now slightly out of date, give the Austin Insider's Guide your cash, not this thing. It's almost encyclopedic in its contents.

Prietita and the Ghost Woman/Prietita y la llorona
Published in Paperback by Childrens Book Press (09 April, 2001)
Average review score:

At least the illustrations are goodThe good news: it's a feminist version of the La Llorona story. The Bad news: it's BORING!! In order to make it more woman-friendly, the author took all the suspense and horror out of the story. The result is only slightly interesting. But, hey, at least the illustrations are good . . .

The Birds of North Central Texas
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (December, 1988)
Average review score:

The Best Part of This One Flew Away........This is actually a very good, informative book in many ways. The problem is in one respect that it's not what its title purports it to be, and it also failed to include photographs--a feature that would be an invaluable addition to a work of this quality. I reside in Brown County--definitely in north-central Texas, but this book's jurisdiction doesn't even come close to where I live. Rather, this book focuses on the Metroplex (DFW) and surrounding environs. Any real Texan knows that the Metroplex isn't even in Central Texas; it's in North Texas. Had this book been properly entitled to indicate that it covers North Texas, and had pictures been included, I would've given it a rating of five stars, despite the fact that it's inappropriate for my locale. As matters stand, I wasted my valuable time and money.
